Tomorrow, When the War Began & Vinyl Cafe Diaries

Marsden, John.  Tomorrow, When the War Began.  Toronto:  Scholastic, 1993.

An adventure novel of the highest degree, Tomorrow, When the War Began  follows Ellie and her friends as they come to grips with the invasion of their country and the survival tactics they must assume.  Do they fight the invaders, surrender and join their families, or go “bush” and hide until it is all over?  Moral issues arise and Ellie finds that during war everything changes, but she is still guided by an overall sense of doing the right thing.  I enjoyed this novel, and look forward to reading the rest of the series.

McLean, Stuart.  Vinyl Cafe Diaries.  Toronto:  Penguin, 2004.

Always irresistible, this addition to the Vinyl Cafe collection is as delightful as the rest.  It wasn’t until I was half way through the short stories that I remembered snippets, and remembered reading it before.  Oh well, not a loss - it was just as good the second time around.  The lovable characters that McLean creates envelop the reader in humour, leaving the books impossible to set down.
