Picoult, Jodi. The Pact: a love story. New York: Avon books, HarperCollins, 2006.
In sleepy Bainbridge, New Hampshire, Emily Gold and Chris Harte are thrown into controversy, and with them, their families into turmoil. After Emily is killed by a gun shot wound, the blame is placed on Chris, and he must come to terms with his upcoming trial. A story of love, human frailty, and hope, The Pact offers readers a disturbing look into both the lives of teenagers and the emotional baggage of marriage and parenthood.
I found this book impossible to put down, but to this day, I am not sure if I genuinely liked it. Like many excellent writers, Jodi Picoult has the ability to make the reader uncomfortable with her raw portrayal of characters. However, with that said, everything about this book is well done. From plot to characterization to pace, everything, just everything, is fantastic.
I have to agree with you. I could not put the book down but once I was finished I couldn’t decide if I liked it. I was so eager to find out what happened. If I had written the ending I would have had the court find Emily’s Journal which held an entry about her sexual abuse as a child. This would have let Chris off and taken the blame off of everyone for why Emily was suicidal.
